On December 19, 2024, The Office of Self-Governance at the Department of the Interior issued a Notice of Deadline for submitting completed applications to begin participation in the Tribal Self-Governance Program in Fiscal Year 2026 or Calendar Year 2026 and established a deadline of March 1, 2025, for Indian Tribes/ Consortia. Tribes/Consortia who would like to be considered for participation in the tribal self-governance program in fiscal year 2026 or calendar year 2026 must respond to this notice, except for those tribes/consortia that are one of the 142 tribal entities with signed self-governance agreements.
Completed applications must be received by the Director, Office of Self-Governance, by March 1, 2025 at the following address:

Under 25 U.S.C. 5362(b) of the Practical Reforms and Other Goals To Reinforce the Effectiveness of Self-Governance and Self-determination (PROGRESS Act), the Secretary, acting through the Director of the Office of Self-Governance, may select not more than 50 new Indian Tribes per year from those eligible tribes to participate. The application deadline of March 1, 2025, is predicated upon providing the parties enough time to complete funding agreement negotiations before the fiscal year or calendar year start date of the 2026 funding agreement.
