On June 30, 2026, the Department of the Interior (DOI) issued a Dear Tribal Leader Letter announcing that it is reconstituting the Secretary’s Tribal Advisory Committee (STAC) and seeking nominations for new STAC members. DOI states that, following a review of the STAC’s structure and functions, it is updating the STAC to strengthen its effectiveness and streamline its operations. DOI is seeking one Tribal representative from each of the twelve Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) regions, as well as additional nominees with experience in Tribal economic development, energy development, public safety, education, and Indian probate for trust assets.
STAC is intended to serve as a high-level forum for government-to-government engagement between Tribal Nations and DOI. Under the updated charter, STAC will continue to provide advice to the Secretary and facilitate discussion of DOI programs, intergovernmental responsibilities, trust assets, lands, waters, treaty and subsistence resources, cultural resources, and other Tribal governmental interests.
Nominees for regional STAC positions must be elected Tribal officials from one of the twelve BIA regions. For subject-matter positions, nominees may be elected Tribal officials or designated Tribal employees authorized to act on behalf of an elected Tribal official. Complete nomination packages must include an official letter from the Tribe, the nominee’s region or area of expertise, contact information and Tribal affiliation, a resume, a personal statement, a statement confirming the nominee’s ability to participate in STAC meetings, and any additional comments that may assist the Department in evaluating the nomination. Once chosen, members will serve at the discretion of the Secretary for terms of up to three years. STAC meetings will occur up to twice annually, with additional meetings held as needed.
Nomination packages must be submitted by July 31, 2026. Please let us know if you would like any assistance preparing or submitting a nomination package.
