The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is soliciting comments, via the attached April 4, 2011, FEDERAL REGISTER notice, on its draft tribal consultation policy. The ONDCP, which is part of the Executive Office of the President, proposes that its consultation policy include not only tribes, but also tribal organizations and urban Indian organizations.
The ONDCP works government-wide in setting and monitoring federal drug policies that include: substance abuse prevention, combating drug production and trafficking, as well as reducing drug-related crime, violence and disease. It is also involved in certifying the drug control budgets of other federal agencies.
The ONDCP notes that, funding permitting, it will attend three annual meetings of national tribal organizations, one of them being the National Congress of American Indians.
The deadline for submitting comments on the draft tribal consultation policy is June 3, 2011. The ONDCP anticipates publishing a final policy within 90 days of the end of the comment period.
